Burnsville/Yancey Chamber of Commerce would like to remind the community that

application for the 2019 Burnsville Christmas Parade are now available. Please stop

by Yancey Chamber of Commerce at 106 West Main Street or email info@yanceychamber.com. Please, don’t miss the dead-line (Friday, November 15, 2019) to sign up your float, car, tractor, walker, horse and Buggy. Parade will be held on Saturday, December 7 at 1pm.

Our next contradance will be Friday, November 1, at 8 pm at Green Cay at Arthur Morgan School. Our caller will be Jesse Edgerton, a fun and energetic dance caller who always spices his dances with lots of humor. As usual, we'll have super-duper fiddle music by Band X. It's great exercise, and as always, you don't need to come with a partner or have previous experience -- each dance is taught with several walk-throughs. Requested donation of $5. THE CENTER FOR PIONEER LIFE

 

The Center for Pioneer Life is proud to host internationally acclaimed premier storyteller Donald David for a four-day residency.

 

Collect Your Memories in a Family Storytelling Workshop led by the Dean of Storytelling, Donald Davis, Tuesday, November 19 from 10 AM — 2 PM at The Center for Pioneer Life at 134 Joe Young Road in Burnsville. Cost is $50. For more information call 828.536.0337.

 

Donald Davis, American storyteller and author, will be performing at the Burnsville Town Center Wednesday, November 20th. Davis had a twenty-year career as a minister before he became a professional storyteller. He has recorded over 25 storytelling albums and written several books. His long career as a teller and his promotion of the cultural importance of storytelling through seminars and master classes has led to Davis being dubbed the “dean of storytelling”. Enjoy his performance Wednesday, November 20, doors open at 6 PM at the Burnsville Town Center. Tickets are $20.

Bare Dark Sky Observatory Community Viewing Nights

Join us for an evening of stargazing as you've never seen before! You will have the opportunity to view the moon, planets and stars through our 34" diameter Sam Scope, as well as our smaller planetary telescope. With the assistance of our Observatory Manager, you will spend 2 hours viewing and learning about the dark skies.

MOUNTAIN PIECEMAKERS QUILT GUILD 

 

The Mountain Piecemakers Quilt Guild will meet Tuesday, November 12 at 1pm at the Burnsville Town Center for their monthly meeting and presentations. Speakers will be from Quilters Gallery of Cleveland, NC, also known as The Pizza Girls. Refreshments prior to meeting start at 12:30pm. GUARDIAN AD LITEM SEEKING VOLUNTEERS

The NC Guardian ad Litem Program is seeking volunteer advocates to represent abused and neglected children in Yancey, Mitchell and Madison counties. Training sessions are held priodically for those who would like to volunteer with this program. LEGAL AID HELP AVAILABLE

FOR LOCAL RESIDENTS

People in Mitchell and Yancey counties now have access to free civil legal aid with the opening of a new Pisgah Legal Services office in Spruce Pine. Most people simply don't know how to navigate non-criminal legal issues and the office can help. The Spruce Pine office is located at 167 Locust Street in Spruce Pine. MISC COMMUNITY INFORMATION

 

Burnsville Council Knights of Columbus bingo games are held in Sacred Heart Church's Social Hall on the first and third Mondays of the month. The first bingo session of November is Monday, 11/4 starting at 1pm. The second is 11/18 at 1pm. The cost is $20 for 10 games. First time bingo players receive a free three-game card. There will be four extra optional games. Light sandwiches, dessert, and refreshments will be served.

 

TOPS - Take Off Pounds Sensibly has moved. The meeting is now in the (FLC) Family Life Center of Higgins United Methodist Church at 5pm until 6pm on Tuesdays. For more information call Renee at 843-367-7760.
