High Peaks Leads Mt. Mitchell Ramble Sept. 28

Join the NC High Peaks Trail Association on Saturday, Sept. 28 for a ramble around the tallest mountain in the Eastern U.S. as the club leads an early-fall excursion on Mt. Mitchell.

The hike is rated as strenuous, with a climb of roughly 1,000 feet during a 4- to 5-mile jaunt around the summit and upper reaches of the mountain. The route will start and end at the restaurant, with a climb up to the summit, followed by a descent to Camp Alice, a loop out to the Ranger Office and a final climb back to the restaurant, where hikers will enjoy pie and coffee if they choose.

Hikers should assemble at the Rose’s parking lot in Burnsville at 8:30 a.m., meeting on the corner overlooking the stoplight on Highway 19. Transportation will be provided in a Yancey van for a $5 donation, reservations required. Dogs are not allowed on the vans so you must provide your own transportation if you plan to bring your pet. Mount Mitchell State Park requires that dogs be kept on leashes at all times, so plan accordingly.

You may also meet the group at the Mt. Mitchell Restaurant parking lot at 9:30 a.m., but it would be helpful to notify the hike leader ahead of time that you plan to do so.

Bring warm clothes, rain gear, snacks, water, lunch and hiking poles if you use them.

Please contact Hike Leader Robert Branch at rbranch18@aol.com or 828-682-3102 by Thursday evening, Sept. 26 to reserve your spot on the van.
