NEW EXHIBIT OPENING 

 

"The Wood Tells a Story" - The History of a Traditional Heritage Craft by an Artisan Woodcarver, national award winning maste rwood carver, David Boone. Opening Wednesday, July 31st through Saturday, October 26. The new display show cases over fifty of David Boone's intricately carved creations beginning with his first figure and wildlife studies along with his most elaborate and celebrated pieces in caricature and realistic depiction.

Thrifty Adventures is opened year-round with 21 adventures to choose from: white-water and flat-water kayaking or rafting trips start in April with river tubing and waterfall rappelling starting in May. We have wetsuits and youth boats. Rock Climbing takes place year round, in winter we offer Mountaineering Courses and Ice Climbing. We also offer youth and Veteran programs. We have discounts for First Responders, Teachers, Veterans and Healthcare Professionals. An additional tidbit...Thrifty Adventures has a local’s discount for folks with Mitchell, McDowell or Yancey addresses. Discounts are good on everything except Lazy Day Tubing.

 

This year we opened a new outpost by the Toe River. We have a $15 Tube option where folks get a one-way shuttle to the Red Hill Swim Hole then a two-hour float (depending on water levels) back to our Outpost. The take out offers an opportunity to check out the Suspension Bridge with a short walk back to the Outpost. We are offering several new river trips along with Tote and Float Boat options (ie boat rentals). We now offer guided plant hikes followed by food tastings at the new Farm. These events feature locally sourced foods to support local farming and businesses!!!

BURNSVILLE HISTORY & HUMOR WALKING TOUR

 

Our charming little town with the big personality now has its own entertaining guided walking tour of the downtown area. History & Humor Walking Tour is steeped in the memories and amusing stories of old-timers born and raised here, the descendants of the hardy souls who settled the area back in the 1700 and 1800s. Tours are offered, weather permitting, Wed. and Fri. at 11 am and Sun. at 1. For reservations, or to book your own tour, email burnsvilletourco@gmail.com or call 828-208-0287.

The 35th Annual Grassy Creek Mineral and Gem Show is put on by the Parkway Fire and Rescue to raise money for new equipment. They are a 501C3 Non Profit Organization.

 

This Gem Show has everything! Over 60 US and International dealers with almost any kind of jewelry, gemstone and mineral specimens, fossil, lapidary equipment and more you might want. Each booth is 20 foot by 40 foot so there are LOTS of items for sale.

Parking and admission are free.

Food is available.

Porta-a-johns are available.

This is an outside event so be prepared for rain.

Dates: Sunday,July 28th to Sunday, August 4th, 2019 with some vendors open on Saturday 27th. 

Hours: 10 to 6 daily with many vendors open earlier and later because they are staying with their booth.

Bare Dark Sky Observatory Community Viewing Nights

Join us for an evening of stargazing as you've never seen before! You will have the opportunity to view the moon, planets and stars through our 34" diameter Sam Scope, as well as our smaller planetary telescope. With the assistance of our Observatory Manager, you will spend 2 hours viewing and learning about the dark skies.

Forge a Boot Scraper     8/3/19

Forge and assemble a functioning boot scraper of traditional design using traditional forging and joinery techniques. Installation methods will be discussed.

 

Healthcare Career Exploration Camp     8/5/19

A fun-filled camp to learn more about the allied health career field. Campers will receive a First Aid and CPR certificate upon completion of the camp.

 

Forge Flat-Jaw and Box-Jaw Tongs          8/10/19

Learn to make flat-jaw and box-jaw tongs using traditional forging techniques. This is a beginner-intermediate level class.

 

Therapeutic Massage    8/14/19

This program provides participants with the basic information and skills needed to take the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Exam (MBLEx) offered by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB). Graduates who pass this exam may apply for licensure to practice in North Carolina.

 

Certified Nurse Assistant I          8/15/19

This state required course is designed for those wishing to become a Certified Nursing Assistant I (CNA). This class consists of classroom work, lab, and clinical rotations. At the end of the course, a separate, state approved agency administers the competency testing.

 

Make Your Own Anvil, Vise, and Forge                 8/16/19

Learn to make these core expensive tools with fully functional new designs. You can make one, two, or all three. 

 

Basic CAD           8/16/19

This course introduces computer-aided drafting software for specific technologies. Emphasis is placed on understanding the software command structure and drafting standards for specific technical fields.

 

Manufacturing Tech Level I        8/19/19

The Manufacturing Technician Level 1 (MT1)© certificate program was developed to meet growing employment needs. The complete MT1 program addresses the core industry-wide skills standards required for skilled production occupations in all types of manufacturing.

 

Clinical Research Associate        8/20/19

This Clinical Research Associate class will review informed consent, International Conference on Harmonization good clinical guidelines (ICH-GCP, and tasks involved in clinical trial monitoring and management. The course is designed for individuals interested in becoming project managers or clinical research associates (CRAs); it’s typically taken by registered nurses (RNs), nursing assistants (CNAs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs) or others seeking to move into a clinical research associate, research coordinator, or project management position.

 

Phlebotomy Technician               8/20/19

This course instructs students on how to conduct patient interviews, check vital signs, collect and transport blood samples to a laboratory for testing purposes. Students will sit for a certification exam upon completion of the course.

 

EKG Technician                8/20/19

This course helps students earn the skills and credentials to administer EKGs, as well as Holter monitoring or stress testing with a certification through the National Healthcareer Association.

 

Industrial Maintenance Tech    8/20/19

This class helps students gain the introductory knowledge and skill required for installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting modern industrial equipment.

 

Deep Tissue-Delve Deeper         8/20/19

This class reviews body mechanics for optimal pressure with minimal strain. Focus on common ailments of the low back with methods to release the psoas, QLs, and SI joints, and the cervical area muscles: scalenes, scm, the tmj, and the levator scapulae.

 

Welding             8/20/19

This course will teach three major processes: SMAW, GMAW, GTAW (stick, mig, and tig), as well as cutting. Power sources, wire-feed setup, maintenance, shielding gases, and safe practices will be covered.

 

Collaborative Robotics Technician          8/20/19

This class studies the principles of collaborative robotics, their uses and applications, and proper operation and maintenance through online learning modules and hands-on lab exercises. Topics include workplace safety; blueprint reading; basics of electrical theory, programmable logic controller theory, and pneumatic theory; robotic connectivity; and basics of collaborative robotic programming and troubleshooting.

 

Intermediate Handgun Skills     8/20/19

This class is for those wanting to perfect their handgun skills. Topics will include drawing and engaging from a holster, engaging one or more targets, and malfunction drills.

 

Vinyasa Yoga                   8/21/19

Class is geared toward beginners, but it includes a variation to challenge all levels and abilities. Breathwork, as well as meditation, will also be a focus. The intention of this class is to get you moving, so you can feel the benefits of yoga on your body, as well as to relieve stress and anxiety.
