Toast the artists and the coming year with good friends, new friends, and those you've yet to meet | | High Peaks Leads Scenic Hikes December 1 Join the NC High Peaks Trail Association for one of two hikes along the Mountains-to-Sea Trail near Asheville on Saturday, Dec. 1. The hikes will wind up the 2018 season and complete the club’s 48 miles of guided hikes along this iconic trail from Buck Creek Gap to the Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The more strenuous hike will start at Ox Creek Road and proceed 7.2 miles to the Folk Art Center and includes a 200-foot ascent and 1,200-foot descent. The less strenuous hike will start at Craven Gap and go for 5.4 miles with a similar up-and-down, also winding up at the Folk Art Center. The group will have some time after the hike to view the craft displays and shop for hand-made crafts. Hikers should assemble on the Burnsville Town Square at 8:30 a.m. Transportation will be provided in Yancey County vans for a donation of $5 per hiker, reservations required by Thursday evening, Nov. 29. Leashed dogs are allowed on the hike but not on the vans, so if you plan to bring your dog you must provide your own transportation. If you plan to drive, please be aware that the Parkway often closes due to ice between Mt. Mitchell and Craggy Gardens, so it may be best to take another route to reach the hike starting points. Bring warm clothes and foul weather gear just in case, along with lunch, water, snacks and hiking poles if you use them. For more information or to make your van reservations, contact hike leader Dennis Smith at Dennissmith4141@gmail.com or 284-4000 for the strenuous hike or Robert Branch at RBranch18@aol.com or 682-5737 for the less-strenuous hike. As always, check the High Peaks Facebook page or website, www.nchighpeaks.org, for last-minute changes due to the weather. | | UPCOMING EVENTS!!!!!! 12/7 Santa Comes To Town Center 5:30 pm 12/8 Holly Jolly Christmas Craft Show 9am – 2pm 6 South Main Street, Burnsville. Through the past several years we have tried to support the less fortunate people of Yancey County with food, clothes or supplies. We are at it again this year. From November 1st through December 11th we are collecting blankets, coats (new or slightly used) and socks!
