High Peaks Leads Challenging Crest Trail Hike Oct. 13

The N.C. High Peaks Trail Association will lead one of its most challenging – and rewarding – hikes of the year when the club takes on the Black Mountain Crest Trail on Saturday, Oct. 13, at the peak of the high elevation leaf color season. The outing will be followed by a pot luck supper  in the Cattail Community.

The 8-mile jaunt will begin at Mt. Mitchell, proceed to Deep Gap and then descend steeply to the Cattail Community. Only seasoned hikers should consider joining because the trek includes several steep climbs, a bit of scrambling down rock faces that requires the use of hand ropes and an overall descent of over 3,000-foot, which is tough on the knees.

Hikers should assemble at the Cattail Community Center at 8:30 a.m. and will be ferried to Mt. Mitchell aboard a Yancey County Transportation van for a donation of $5 per person. Pets are not allowed on the vans, so if you want to bring your leashed dog you must arrange your own car shuttle.

Bring warm clothes, foul weather gear, lunch, snacks, plenty of water and hiking poles if you have them, since they are great for cushioning the impact of steep downhill hikes.

Everyone is invited to a potluck dinner after the hike at the Cattail home of Worth and Susan Weller, which will begin between 4 and 5 p.m. Please bring your beverage of choice and a side dish that will be collected before the hike begins.

Van reservations are required by Thursday evening October 11.  If you are uncertain whether you can do this hike contact the hike leader to discuss your level of fitness and experience.  Hikers must be able to keep up with the group. Hike leader John Whitehouse can be reached at 828-682-3217 or trails@nchighpeaks.org.

As always, check the High Peaks website, www.nchighpeaks.org, or Facebook page for last-minute changes due to weather.

Conveniently located between Asheville, Boone and Hickory, NC, and just 20 miles from I-40 and 2 miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway, find treasures that will last a lifetime and have an experience to match.

Visit Gem Mountain and share the history, the tradition, and excitement of gem mining.

BURNSVILLE LITTLE THEATRE

Director David Lean is usually associated with sweeping epics like "Lawrence of Arabia" not comedy. Hobson's Choice is a far cry from those grandiose color productions, but this 1954 black and white classic has charm, wit, and eccentric characters. Hobson's Choice is the BLT choice for screening on October 15 at 7pm at the Yancey Theatre. Also on the bill is Chapter 10 of the 1939 classic serial "Daredevils of The Red Circle. Everyone is invited to attend.

Beautiful fall colors will highlight the barns in the rural landscape. The Friday, October 19 tour will begin at 9am and end at approximately Noon in the Ingles’ parking lot in Mars Hill (and, yes, there will be a bathroom stop in the middle). The cost is $40 per person. To reserve your spot, email info@appalachianbarns.org or call Sandy at 828 380-9146. We look forward to sharing this wonderful experience with you.
