We need your help again this year as we have approximately 53 students who qualify. This is the largest group of Scholars we have celebrated and we are extremely proud of our graduates for their hard work. The requirements for becoming a North Carolina Scholar are a 3.5 un-weighted GPA, College Prep Curriculum plus 2 upper level 5pt electives, 1 CTE, and 1 arts course. Mitchell Hike May 5 Join the NC High Peaks Trail Association for a fun hike May 5 from the summit of Mt. Mitchell down to an historic railroad grade that once carried timber and tourists from the highest peak in the eastern U.S. The 4.5-mile jaunt will be all downhill, dropping about 1,300 feet in elevation and ending where the Mountains-to-Sea Trail crosses Highway 128, about a mile from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Highlights include the summit tower, Camp Alice and the old Perley and Crockett Lumber Co. railroad grade/toll road, which dates back about 100 years. Hikers should assemble on the Burnsville Town Square at 8:30 a.m. Transportation will be provided in a Yancey County van for a donation of $5 per hiker, reservations required by the evening of Thursday, May 3. Leashed dogs are welcome on the hike but not on the vans, so if you plan to bring your pet you must arrange your own transportation. Bring warm clothes, rain gear, lunch, snacks, plenty of water and hiking poles if you use them. The hike is rated as moderately strenuous with some rocky sections, a couple of creek crossings and some wet, muddy sections. Do bring lots of layers as the wind and temperature on Mt.
