Penland School of Crafts Community Open House
The Penland School of Craft Community Open House will take place on Saturday, February 29 from 1:00 – 5:00 PM. This is an afternoon of fun and education for all ages with hands-on activities in most of Penland’s teaching studios. No admission is charged. Many activities are messy, so don’t wear your fancy clothes.
Here are the activities for the afternoon: In the clay studio you can make a pot on the potter’s wheel or create a little clay sculpture and decorate it. In the metals studio, choose a design to press into copper and then turn your piece into a pin or charm. In photo, make an image using light-sensitive cyanotype paper. In iron you can move through several stations to make a kitchen spatula. Iron studio spaces are limited; names will be collected for a lottery starting at 12:45 and will be assigned by drawing at 1:00.
In the print studio you can make your own print on the Vandercook letterpress and watch a linoleum cutting demonstration. Visitors to the textiles studio can blockprint on a bandana with textile pigments. In the wood studio, make a dice or two out of wood. At the Ridgeway building, make decorative paper using the paste-paper painting process. In the paper studio you can learn the basics of sheet forming and embedding by making handmade paper pizza slices.
In glass, make either a paperweight or a juice glass. Glass studio spaces are limited; names will be collected for a lottery starting at 12:45 and will be assigned by drawing at 1:00. Glass activities are limited to visitors 12 years of age and above. And in the school store, you can make decorative paper pinwheels.
The Mitchell High School Band Boosters will be selling hot dog lunches from 12:30 to 5:00 PM as a fundraiser. The Penland coffee house will also be open during the afternoon. For more information see WEBSITE.

MISCELLANEOUS
BILL CARSON TO BE
HONORED BY VISIT NC
On Tuesday, March 23, Visit NC, the Economic Development Partnership with North Carolina state organization, will award the Esse Quam Videri Award to Bill Carson, co-founder of the Orchard at Altapass. The awards ceremony/luncheon will take place at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville.
The mission of Visit NC is to “unify and lead the state in positioning North Carolina as a preferred destination for travelers and film production and in maximizing economic vitality statewide.” The Esse Quam Videri Award recognition program that began in 2019, echoes the state motto—to be, rather than to seem and celebrates a recipient’s gift of time, energy and resources to elevate a destination to new heights.
Over the past 25 years, Carson has dedicated all three of those gifts to the preservation of the lands at Altapass and the deep-rooted culture of its peoples with the agri-tourism at the Orchard at Altapsss.
