High Peaks Leads High-Elevation Hikes Aug. 17

Beat the summer heat and score some spectacular views by joining the NC High Peaks Trail Association for one of two hikes on Saturday, Aug. 17, with both venturing to high elevations along the Mountains-to-Sea Trail.

The longer hike, rated as strenuous, will go from Walker Knob Overlook up to Blackstock Knob and down to Mount Mitchell Road (NC 128) for a distance of 4.6 miles and an elevation gain of 1,200 feet. The moderate hike will start at Mount Mitchell Road and go out-and-back to Rainbow Gap, a distance of 4 miles and an elevation gain of about 600 feet.

Both hikes offer spectacular views and cool temperatures as each will take hikers above the 6,000-foot elevation mark.

Hikers should assemble on the Burnsville Town Square at 8:30 a.m. A van will shuttle hikers for the long hike, reservations required and a donation of $5 per person required. The shorter hike will rely on car pools.

Bring lunch, water, foul weather gear, snacks and hiking poles if you use them. Leased dogs are allowed on the hike but not on the vans, so if you want to bring your pooch you will need to provide your own transportation.

Hikers should contact long hike leader Robert Branch at rbranch18@aol.com or 828-682-3102 by Thursday evening, Aug. 15 to reserve their seat on the shuttle van. For the moderate hike, contact leader John Whitehouse at trails@nchighpeaks.org or 682-3217 for more information.

As always, check the High Peaks Facebook page or website, www.nchighpeaks.org, for last-minute changes due to weather.

Charles Frazier

Carolina Mountains Literary Festival Keynote Speaker

The 14th Annual Carolina Mountains Literary Festival will bring dozens of authors to Burnsville, NC this September 5-7. The 2019 theme is On the Move with stories of migration, immigration, and travel-physical, emotional & spiritual.

Each year, the festival has featured a renowned Keynote Speaker and this year will not disappoint. Charles Frazier, author of four novels including Cold Mountain, which was adapted into an academy award winning movie of the same name, will be this year’s Keynote Speaker.

Mr. Frazier’s tales of displacement and journey in the face of emotional upheaval are closely aligned with the On the Move theme. Cold Mountain tells the story of Inman, a Confederate Army deserter and his harrowing journey back home to the Western Carolina Mountains and Ada, the woman he loves and was torn from by the Civil War. His most recent novel, Varina, is the story of the young woman who marries Jefferson Davis and later flees Richmond with her children and a bounty on their heads during the failing years of the Confederacy.

The Saturday night Keynote will feature Charles Frazier in conversation with novelist and award winning author Elaine Orr. The discussion will revolve around the themes of this year’s festival – travel, migration, immigration – and how they apply to his work. While the theme applies in some way to all of Mr. Frazier’s books, the focus will be on Inman’s long and difficult journey home in Cold Mountain and the forced removal of the Cherokee in his second book, Thirteen Moons.

The relevance of Frazier’s novels to the Carolina Mountains Literary Festival goes beyond this year’s theme as three of his four novels are placed in North Carolina.

The Keynote will take place on Saturday, Sept 7th at 6:30 pm Burnsville Town Center. Pre-registration with $25.00 fee is required.Register at www.cmlitfest.org. Mr. Frazier and Ms. Orr will be signing books immediately after the Keynote.

To learn about all of the authors coming to the Festival, the Banquet, the writing workshops and the schedule of free readings go to www.cmlitfest.org.

BURNSVILLE LITTLE THEATRE

The Classic Movie Club has chosen the gripping, suspenseful film The Night of the Hunter for the Monday, August 19, screening at 7pm at Yancey Theatre. This 1955 masterpiece was sadly the only film ever directed by the formidable English actor Charles Laughlin and was the inspiration for many new directors to follow. This film stars Robert Mitchum as one of the most memorable screen villains of all time. The cast also includes Shelly Winters, who is very effective as the widow Willa Harper, and the silent screen star, Lillian Gish, as an elderly gun-toting woman who shelters lost children, a role she plays to perfection. Also on the bill is chapter seven of the 1952 Commando Cody serial Radar Men From The Moon. Everyone is invited to enjoy the Classic Movie Club's screening of these two films. There are no ticket sales but your donations are appreciated.

THE ARTS

PARKWAY PLAYHOUSE

GET THE HOOK

Under the direction of Kristen Donelle Livengood, Get the Hook is a troupe of teens who are no strangers to the script and demonstrate what they can do OFF-BOOK. They will keep you laughing as they play high energy games based on suggestions from you—the audience.

Get the Hook debuted in August 2015 after students attending a musical theatre summer camp were introduced to improv games. Troupe members have been featured on the WUNC radio show “the State of Things” and have headlined at the NC Comedy Arts Festival (Chapel Hill, NC; 2016 & 2017) and the New South Comedy Festival (Greenville, SC; 2017 & 2018).

One of the great things about being in the Hook is that once a year, troupe members attend the New South Comedy Festival, a weekend event that brings improvisors together to expose what comedy, as an art form, can make possible.
